Dental Implants:
Are They Worth It?

Implant Dentistry

Doing dental implants is a sub-specialty of basic dental dentistry, and the people dealing with it are called Prosthodontists. They take care of the oral health of people who wear false teeth or are potential customers for dentures. Also, people suffering from tooth-loss due to infection or accident can make use of tooth implants or complete dentures.

In the latter case, the remaining teeth of the patient are removed, and after taking measurements of the jaw the complete denture is fitted. In case of dental implants, the remaining teeth of the patient are not removed. Instead, a cylinder-shaped structure made of pure titanium called an implant is fitted surgically into the jawbone.

For optimum results, at least two dental implants need to be inserted to provide better support to the implant denture. The implants are then left in place to allow bones and tissue to grow in around it and tighten it, naturally, with the jaw. The implant extension for securing the denture is then screwed into the dental implant by removing the tissue grown around it.

The implant denture can be worn immediately after the implants are inserted into the jaw. However, to comply with the changing jaw condition after healing, dentures need to be readjusted and modified.

Advantage vs. Cost

The advantage of implant dentistry over regular dentures is that you do not face the problem of their coming off while eating, sneezing or coughing, since they have an interlocking system. The additional cost of implants is as high as $3000 to $ 5000 per tooth, yet its advantages more than outweigh the expense.

Care

Avoiding complications with dental implants requires stringent maintenance under the supervision of a qualified dentist. Implants should be regularly checked for any wear or necessary adjustments.

A typical implant lasts for at least 4 to 5 years depending upon the age of the person and the changing composition of his jaw and the growth of tissues and bones. Advancing age and poor upkeep may also require denture replacemen.
