Sedation Dentistry

For those who fear dental work

Many people are anxious about visiting a dentist. Sedation dentistry is an approach that allows people to have dental work they fear done while they "sleep." They remain in a state of relaxed comfort, though they are conscious. A patient may choose a pill, nitrous oxide or an injection for inducing sedation.

A sedation dentist monitors the vital signs of the patient throughout the procedure, to maintain a safe level of sedation. The sedative dose depends on the time required to complete the dental procedure.

Patients who have a dental phobia because of previous traumatic experiences or due to a troublesome gag reflex can opt for sedation. Those who are not affected by local anesthesia or with sensitive teeth may also need sedation dentistry.

Is it the right choice for you?

Sedation dentistry is not for everyone and it should not be forced on anyone. However, many dentists choose sedation when they themselves undergo dental procedures.

There are many websites, which promote "sleep dentistry" or sedation dentistry as the ideal solution for those with dental phobia. These websites offer sedation or general anesthesia and try to convince people that this is the right choice for them. Some patients agree to sedation because they feel they may panic and the dentist may be upset or angry with them.

It's probably better to look for a dentist with whom you are comfortable. You must not be taken in by marketing hype and try to decide for yourself whether you really require sedation dentistry.

Dentists May Lack People Skills

Some dentists may recommend sedation dentistry merely because they lack the people skills to put their patients at ease. They may also use sedation because a patient does not want to know anything about the dental procedure. He may also want to get it done in the shortest possible time.

Dentists get extensive training in medical practice, including sedation and anesthesia. However, they may get little or no training in psychology or human behavior. Thus, they tend to prefer the use of drugs for sedation to people skills, for reducing anxiety in their patients. Latrosedation or anxiety relief through the doctor's behavior is important for the success of any dental procedure.

Some dentists use soothing music or audio sedation to help their patients to relax. Those who are good at using people skills as well as sedation are often called "painless dentists."

Finally, while the risks associated with sedation dentistry are low, the final decision rests with the patient who must be guided adequately by the doctor. Regardless of the decision you make, it is good to know that there is a painless option available, should you feel the need.
